* For those who can't remember the lyrics to the 1980's hit - Superfly Guy by S'Express, below is an extract...

Superfly guy, gonna take you higher
Superfly guy, gonna take you high
Superfly guy, gonna take you higher
Superfly guy, gonna take you high

He is mad, he is smooth
He's the man that makes you move
He is mad, he is smooth
He's the man that makes you move

Thank You Cyprus

On behalf of the Parents who attended this year’s Cyprus Training Camp I would like to thank Guy and Dan for organising the outstanding and extremely challenging week of Swimming and Land Training which tested our swimmers to the maximum.

This was a Swim Camp designed to the highest standard with Guy and Dan being well supported by Shirley and Alex (her massages proved vital for everyone). The benefits from this Camp will be seen to different degrees by each of the swimmers who attended. The Open water swims, the distance runs, the hours of Land Training and of course the structured pool sessions will put our swimmers in a fantastic physical and mental condition for the season ahead.

It is my ambition to have as many members of the top squads at our training camp as possible and I will be pursuing every avenue of funding, both internal and external over the next nine months to make this happen.

New Summer Championships to Aid Young British Talent

You can read the full details here.

Temporary Goodbye!

BASC says a temporary goodbye to two swimmers from the National Squad this week as they move on to University - Chris Wilkinson and Jenny Gibson.

Jenny has been swimming with the club for a long time and is described by Guy as a “coach’s joy”. She never misses a session, always does what is asked, never complains and has a wonderful swimming personality.

Chris has been with the club since the age of 10 and now leaves for university at the age of 23 for the second time. During his time he won National Medals and represented Great Britain in Biathle.

Both swimmers set a good example to others with their motivation, attitude and skills, and they will be missed by all swimmers and coaches.

British Gas ASA National Champion - Stephanie Blakeburn!!

Billingham ASC swimmer Stephanie Blakeburn has returned from The British Gas National Swimming Championships in Sheffield as National Champion in the 200 metres individual medley event.  Stephanie stormed to victory in the 200 metres individual medley final to win the gold medal in a super new personal best time.

Stephanie had qualified for the final in first place where she had to beat off strong opposition, including Olympic medalist Kerry –Anne Payne, to win the gold medal taking 2 seconds off her previous best time. Stephanie later received accreditation from The Amateur Swimming Association and was named as swimmer of the day in The Championships.

Three days later, Stephanie was back on the medal podium again, winning the bronze medal in 200 metres butterfly in another hotly contested race. Stephanie had qualified for the final in fourth place and powered her way to win the bronze medal in the final.

Throughout the week Stephanie competed in a total of seven events setting personal best times and also reaching the finals of 400 metres freestyle, 100 metres butterfly and freestyle.

Head Coach Guy Fawkes was delighted with Stephanie’s impressive swimming results.  He said that this has been a particularly tough year for Steph, combining a full time degree course at Teesside University with her demanding training schedule. Steph has managed to balance both with excellent results. It is wonderful to see her end the swimming year crowned as National Champion.

Paddle Boarding Bootcamp - July 2014

Paddle Boarding is a sport which originates from Hawaii and is known as hoe he’e nalu. The top two Billingham swim squads took part in a paddle boarding boot camp – unfortunately not in the sun kissed islands of Hawaii, but the seaside town that is twinned with Honolulu; Saltburn!

A fun filled afternoon both on, and in the water was had by all. Followed by fish and chips and a game of football.
