BASC says a temporary goodbye to two swimmers from the National Squad this week as they move on to University - Chris Wilkinson and Jenny Gibson.
Jenny has been swimming with the club for a long time and is described by Guy as a “coach’s joy”. She never misses a session, always does what is asked, never complains and has a wonderful swimming personality.
Chris has been with the club since the age of 10 and now leaves for university at the age of 23 for the second time. During his time he won National Medals and represented Great Britain in Biathle.
Both swimmers set a good example to others with their motivation, attitude and skills, and they will be missed by all swimmers and coaches.

"With British Swimming due to make a decision on the future competition structure, we have decided that our proposed Long Course meet in November may not be the best investment of swimmers efforts and money. We are there withdrawing it and replacing it with a Level 3 Short Course meet, which will provide opportunities for swimmers to gain County Qualifying times and fits better with the anticipated competition structure"
Training is cancelled for all squads on Saturaday 14th November due to a gala held at the Forum. This is the same weekend of the Luton meet. A further reminder will be posted closer to the time.
Billingham ASC swimmer Stephanie Blakeburn has returned from The British Gas National Swimming Championships in Sheffield as National Champion in the 200 metres individual medley event. Stephanie stormed to victory in the 200 metres individual medley final to win the gold medal in a super new personal best time.
Stephanie had qualified for the final in first place where she had to beat off strong opposition, including Olympic medalist Kerry –Anne Payne, to win the gold medal taking 2 seconds off her previous best time. Stephanie later received accreditation from The Amateur Swimming Association and was named as swimmer of the day in The Championships.
Three days later, Stephanie was back on the medal podium again, winning the bronze medal in 200 metres butterfly in another hotly contested race. Stephanie had qualified for the final in fourth place and powered her way to win the bronze medal in the final.
Throughout the week Stephanie competed in a total of seven events setting personal best times and also reaching the finals of 400 metres freestyle, 100 metres butterfly and freestyle.
Head Coach Guy Fawkes was delighted with Stephanie’s impressive swimming results. He said that this has been a particularly tough year for Steph, combining a full time degree course at Teesside University with her demanding training schedule. Steph has managed to balance both with excellent results. It is wonderful to see her end the swimming year crowned as National Champion.
Paddle Boarding is a sport which originates from Hawaii and is known as hoe he’e nalu. The top two Billingham swim squads took part in a paddle boarding boot camp – unfortunately not in the sun kissed islands of Hawaii, but the seaside town that is twinned with Honolulu; Saltburn!
A fun filled afternoon both on, and in the water was had by all. Followed by fish and chips and a game of football.
